In The Car This Morning...

Macy Gray was on the radio.
God bless that beautiful sparrow-on-sandpaper voice.

I feel awful today. Had very little sleep. Here’s something: How many potentially life-altering offers do we unwittingly pass up on?

Today’s question brought to you by the resident emotional klutz.

Potentially too many. Then again, if we passed up on them then we implicitly value the status quo more than the possible pain or gain brought about by change.

Or maybe we were just being lazy or shortsighted.

I tend to think it's the latter.

How about we're surrounded by a plethora of life-altering decisions and we actually embrace a ton of them except that we can only experience or pass up on the one offered in this particular world? ;)

"Plethora" is good.
Remember Jeanette Winterson: "Seeing you I want no other life", in reference to all the possibilities spread out before you like a fan.

On "deleting regret."

Unfortunately this choice is not not up to us, more often than not.

That said, there is a way that the present and future can save the past: The better we get at making decisions in the present about our future course, the more we tend to use happier colors to paint our past.

"Seeing you I want no other life" -- I've gotten it mixed up. This is Michael Ondaatje's.
